Why choose CAN FD Shield for Arduino?

  • Develop for CAN FD and Classical CAN. Use the appropriate mode and bit timing for your network.
  • Keep your Arduino development tools. The documentation covers Uno (ATmega328), Mega (ATmega1280/2560) and Leonardo (ATmega32U4) hosts.
  • Build a logging application. The SD card slot provides a storage interface; your firmware determines which frames are captured and how they are stored.
  • Plan shared SPI resources. Configurable CAN CS, SD-card CS and INT pins help you coordinate the shield with other devices.
  • Use documented connections. DB9 pinout options, a CAN terminal and the termination resistor switch are covered in the hardware guide.

What can you build?

  • CAN FD development: test sending and receiving frames between compatible nodes.
  • Custom CAN loggers: write selected messages to an SD card using your own logging firmware.
  • Controller prototypes: connect Arduino application logic to CAN-equipped systems.
  • CAN-based vehicle experiments: develop the required application protocol and use a correctly wired cable.

Start with a CAN communication example.

  1. Prepare the shield and host. Assemble the required plug-in parts and verify the board pin map.
  2. Install the CAN FD library. Use the shield-specific CS and INT configuration shown in the examples.
  3. Wire the CAN network. Check pinout, ground reference and termination. Set matching arbitration and data-phase bit rates for FD operation.
  4. Run a send/receive test. Use another compatible node, then add filtering or SD logging as your project requires.

Prepare for your first test: A compatible Arduino board, USB data cable, CAN wiring, assembly tools if needed and another compatible CAN node or test interface. Add an SD card for logging and a compatible cable for OBD-II projects.

Frequently asked questions

Can it operate without an Arduino?

No. The shield provides the CAN hardware; the Arduino host runs your application.

Does the SD slot make this a finished data logger?

No. It provides a storage interface. You need an SD card and firmware to select, timestamp and save the data. Capture performance depends on the host, storage access and bus traffic.

Is 10 MHz the CAN speed?

No. It is the maximum SPI interface clock listed for the shield. CAN arbitration and data-phase bit rates must be configured separately to match the network.

Will it work with every newer Arduino board?

The documented hosts are the AVR-based Uno, Mega and Leonardo models listed above. Check voltage, SPI routing, library support and pin mapping for other boards before ordering.

Does the OBD-II or CANopen pinout provide those protocols?

The DB9 configuration defines the connector wiring. Diagnostic requests, PID decoding and CANopen behavior require appropriate application firmware or a protocol stack. An OBD-II cable alone does not add diagnostic software.

CAN FD Shield

I bought a CAN Bus shield, and found that my device only supports CAN FD, so I bought this again, and I used it quickly against the wiki. It's a good product.
