CANBED FD · STANDALONE ARDUINO CAN FD DEVELOPMENT KIT
Build a CAN FD node on one compact board.
CANBed FD combines an ATmega32U4 microcontroller, MCP2517FD CAN controller and CAN FD-capable transceiver. Upload your own Arduino sketch over Micro-USB and run a CAN-connected application without a separate Arduino host board.

Before you order: The main PCB is assembled. Supplied plug-in connectors, headers and switch are not soldered by default. Allow for soldering, or contact us about the required assembly before ordering. A Micro-USB data cable and an OBD-II cable are not included.
Why choose CANBed FD?
- Run your own application on the board. The onboard ATmega32U4 comes with an Arduino Leonardo bootloader and has 32KB flash, 2.5KB SRAM and 1KB EEPROM.
- Combine MCU and CAN hardware. Skip the separate Arduino-to-CAN module wiring when building a compact prototype.
- Develop for CAN FD or Classical CAN. Use the matching examples, mode and bit timing for your project.
- Choose DB9 or terminal wiring. Fit the supplied connector that suits your setup and use the documented DB9 pinout configuration.
- Connect local peripherals. I2C, UART, SPI, analog inputs and digital I/O let you add sensors or controls. An ICSP interface is available for AVR development.
What can you build?
- CAN FD nodes: connect local inputs and outputs to a compatible CAN network.
- Protocol experiments: learn and test Classical CAN or FD message exchange.
- Compact controller prototypes: combine application logic and CAN hardware in one board.
- Custom CAN-based OBD-II applications: develop the protocol software and use a compatible cable.
Start with a CAN communication example.
- Assemble the required connectors. Choose the DB9 or terminal connection and solder the plug-in parts you need.
- Connect Micro-USB. Follow the Arduino Leonardo setup and install the CAN FD library.
- Configure the example for CANBed FD. Use the board-specific CS and INT settings rather than the shield defaults.
- Connect and test the bus. Check CAN wiring, ground reference, termination and bit timing against another compatible node before adding your application.
Prepare for your first test: A Micro-USB data cable, soldering tools, CAN wiring and another compatible CAN node or test interface. A separate Arduino board is not required. An OBD-II cable is needed for an OBD-II connection.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need another Arduino board?
No. The onboard ATmega32U4 runs your application. Use a computer and Micro-USB cable to upload your firmware.
How is CANBed FD different from CANBed?
Both are standalone ATmega32U4 development boards. This version uses the MCP2517FD and supports CAN FD as well as Classical CAN; the MCP2515-based CANBed supports Classical CAN.
Is this a ready-to-use USB-CAN adapter?
It is a development kit. PC-tool compatibility requires suitable firmware and host software; it is not established simply by plugging in USB.
Does the OBD-II or CANopen pinout provide those protocols?
The DB9 configuration defines the connector wiring. Diagnostic requests, PID decoding and CANopen behavior require appropriate application firmware or a protocol stack. An OBD-II cable alone does not add diagnostic software.
